Well, I'm hella tired. So sleep and doing odds and ends are looking very appealing. Also writing and editing. I'm signing up for various workshops and classes and just came across a developmental editing class that I signed up for...a year ago. I should probably finish that. In a couple of weeks, I will be looking for editing, teaching, speaking, writing gigs, but I definitely need to recharge a bit. Let me know if you're interested in my sundry nonIT skills. For the IT end of things, my contracting company will keep looking and the very large healthcare co. that currently rents my services has expressed interest in having me back in another capacity so we'll see if anything works out there. In the next couple of weeks, I have vending at Twin Cities Pride this weekend (500,000+ people, 3 day marathon - come see us at the Queer Writes Tent in Loring Park!), the Inbound Book Fair for Grownups in 2 weeks (4-5000 people last year, 2 day marathon - come see us at the Fairgrounds in the Education Building!), followed immediately thereafter by Readercon (my schedule is lit!). Then back for a couple of weeks, then off to Seattle for Worldcon. Somewhere in there, I will freak about money if I haven't figured something out, but I also figure I've been planning for this for the last year and if I don't seize the moments where I can, when will I?

The heat (it was 101 degrees today, and tonight has not dipped past 95 degrees with a high barometric pressure, and moderate air quality) - resulted in a sick nauseous headache by the time I got home, which is still lurking in the background. I felt dizzy, wiped out and off. Most likely the hangers on from my bout with COVID last week.

So instead of walking the fifteen to twenty blocks to the voting place, which is about a twenty minute walk in the heat, not helped by my sciatic nerve, I copped out. I feel really bad about it. But it is what it is. It's not like I have anyone I really want to vote for anyhow. I really did not like any of the people running. I'd landed on one, but I wasn't happy with the choice. I'll vote in the actual election - possibly by mail. This has taught me to try mail in voting from now on.

Heat and menopausal bodies are not mixy things. I also think my blood pressure was a bit off. I took the additional meds, it's seems to have leveled off a little now.

21. What is your favourite salad dressing?

Right now, it's usually lemon juice. I rarely use it. But if I do use it - I live olive oil and vingear, or Cesar Salad Dressing (with anchovies flavoring it).

22. Have you owned an aquarium or had a pond in your garden/backyard?

Don't have a backyard. So no on the pond. Parents had a lagoon for a bit.
And brother has a pond in his backyard, but not sure that counts? I owned an aquarium when I was a child - but not since then, too high maintenance.

23. Where is your favourite holiday destination – have you been more than once?

Don't really have one? I grew up with the view that you go somewhere different every year. I go to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (it's a nice island off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia, that has sandy beaches, and is large enough to have a town, etc. It's not a small island.) But I only go to visit my mother, previously my parents, whom I'm exceedingly close to.

24. In 1911 French couturier Paul Poiret held his infamous 'The 1002nd Night' costume ball to launch his “Parfums de Rosine", the first signature scent linked to a design house. Have you a favourite scent?

I am allergic to most perfumes, unfortunately. They give me headaches. But I do like Lavender - doesn't bother me. (Note - most people with scent allergies or who are sensitive to perfume, have no problems with lavender for some reason or other). I also like lemon or citrus, euclyaptus, and pine.

Cinnamon now makes me sneeze. And Vanilla can make me queasy at times, weirdly.

I adore the scent of coffee.

More on what comforts me?

Songs or musicians that I find comforting?

* Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, The Magnetic Stripes, Sand Sheff, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Sondheim's Into the Woods, The Stones, David Bowie, Janis Ian, Suzanne Vega, Joan Jett and the Runaways/ also that other band - basically anything with Joan Jett, Brenda Carlyle, the Indigo Girls,
and Pink Floyd

Mostly Folk and Classic Rock, also classical music - anything by Yo Yo Ma, or John Williams movie themes. I have a fondness for Gershwin and Jazz. Jazz reminds me of my Dad, who adored it, that and Frank Sinatra.

**

Smartbitches tempted me to buy another couple of books on Kindle, both were a $1.99. Went to get the first one, Hench, only to discover I'd already purchased it a year ago and forgotten about it. At least Amazon will inform me, other places aren't as considerate.

***

A picture of the fountain outside my workplace. It's finally working. No, no one was climbing into it. They can't without hurting the flowers. It's not a swimming fountain.

People were threatening to open up fire hydrants today - which is illegal. The city parks and the city has fountains folks can play in.

Nearly a Year Ago I pre-ordered a Puella Magi Madoka Magica Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print. There were many delays and sparse correspondence. But, finally, this morning I was able to go to the post office and sign for the package from Akihabara Premium Collection.

The actual print is beautiful – exactly as advertised. I am delighted.

I ... I guess that's that.

My group members stepped up at the last minute and helped out with the paper, so I turned that in on Thursday. I also explicitly abdicated all responsibility for putting together the five-minutes-each video recordings for the group presentation. I recorded that last night, realised this morning that it was actually under five minutes but also how to fix it, re-recorded it, and sent it off. And just now I hit Submit Quiz on the final.

I'm ... done? Grades will be out at some point to confirm that I did in fact pass, both "sufficient unto graduation" and "sufficient unto my own arbitrary standard". (Pretty sure I did, but grades for this class have been Not Terribly Forthcoming, so there's the possibility of an unpleasant surprise. Not at all likely, but possible.)

Onward. After credential: chop wood, carry water. Time to get (more) serious about ye jobhunt.

You cannot know what happens next.

Thursday is recycle day so I figured, since I'm stuck inside, it might be time to attack that stack of doujinshi that's been sitting out for yonks waiting to be sorted and trunned. This means reading through them just in case there's something I can't bear to part with: or at least to relive the greatest hits of 1993. Found that a very little goes a long way, partly because my Japanese has degraded to near unuseableness, partly because the dead past is so very dead. Not helped by trying to decipher the ones in penji-- written not printed Japanese-- which was always my downfall. Eventually I may decide that a fast flip-through is all that's required, but that day is not yet.

Last year I read "The Tainted Cup," which kicks off the "Shadow of the Leviathan" series; detective Din, who's been magically modified to have a perfect memory, goes around conducting interviews for his boss Ana, who's brilliant but easily overstimulated, in an empire built on a bio-hacking arms race between humans and sea monsters. My impression of that one was that, as always, Bennett's worldbuilding is fantastic, and the mystery plot was well done. However, I wasn't as engrossed by the characters: Din was harboring a terrible secret that turned out to be neither, and Ana was completely unable to hold her tongue even in front of important people, while the "good guys bending the rules but getting away with it" versus "bad guys breaking the rules and causing problems" felt like a distinction without a difference at times.

Well, I am here to report that "A Drop of Corruption" sticks with the stuff I loved from "The Tainted Cup," while improving upon the stuff I didn't!

Din's personal issues seem more prosaic here: he's working as a civil servant to support his family, but dogged by his father's debts. Last book, he had a thing for Captain Kepheus Strovi, and this book establishes that, a year later, it was more than just a fling; Din still carries a torch for Kepheus, and in the latter's absence, has been having a lot of casual sex as an ineffective coping mechanism. (This book establishes that he enjoys unfulfilling one-night stands with women as well as men.) If anything, I think "A Drop of Corruption" glided over his reading difficulties almost too well; there are several places where Din just...reads stuff, instead of asking for help.

Ana, for her part, is as foul-mouthed as ever around Din, but is less of a nuisance around others. And one of the suspects who, if ultimately innocent of the worst of the conspiracy, was still acting outside the law, does face consequences for their actions.

This book moves the plot to Yarrow, a small monarchy northeast of Khanum. Because of its geographic location, it has great strategic value for the Imperial scientists and researchers; almost a century ago, the king signed a treaty to incorporate it into Khanum a hundred years later. So as that deadline is approaching, there's lots of political and economic integration, but Ana and Din are still technically not on the Empire's soil, which puts their investigation in a legally murky status. And I think that level of "...well, I dunno if our jurisdiction applies, but let's go with it..." makes Ana's shenanigans easier to tolerate.

We meet a new supporting character, Tira Malo, a native of Yarrow who has been modified to give her preternatural senses that help with the investigation. Malo's cynicism about the way monarchy and society work in Yarrow felt like a realistic POV.

There's some potty humor:
"My least favorite part of going out with you lot," muttered Tangis. "Not just the poor rations, but I got to wait for one of you to tell me where to piss."
"You want your prick gobbled up by a lurking turtle, then feel free to piss where you like," said Malo.
"It's been so long since my prick was gobbled by anything, ma'am," retorted Tangis, "that p'rhaps I'd not turn down a reaper-back's kiss."
Malo was so amused by this that she translated it for her fellow wardens, who whooped and chuckled huskily. It made for a strange sound: they had trained so strenuously as hunters, apparently, that they even knew how to avoid laughing aloud.

"King Lalaca has--had?--seventy-six wives in his harem, and two hundred and sixteen acknowledged children. This means he has rather a lot of heirs to choose from."
Stunned, I looked to Malo, who shrugged.
"Wherever did the fellow find the time?" I asked.
"Shut up, Din!" snapped Ana.
Spoilers for this and one of Bennett's other books:

I'm not much of a horror person, and this series has lots of body horror: skin turning into leaves, leaves turning into bones, bizarre research facilities that are made of enormous plant and animal tissue. Yet, with Bennett, it almost always works for me, it's just "part of the aesthetic, let's roll with it." I was squicked by some forced drug use as applies to Din in his investigations. (Ana has her own, very idiosyncratic, methods of sensory stimulus or dampening that work for her; she sometimes enjoys overindulging in lots of food, and/or doing lots and lots of drugs, but that's her own choice.) I've seen some discussion on other people's reviews that sort of primed me to look for foreshadowing about where the series might go later, and that felt intriguing without being too much of a distraction from the main plot.

The way things ultimately resolve (or don't) with Din's feelings for Strovi wasn't really satisfying. But ultimately, it's pretty high praise that the weakest part of the book for me was the author's note at the end. I don't think it's a great look to dunk on other creative works in your own acknowledgements. And the book itself does a good job of communicating the message that "as cool as Yarrow looks to Din" (they don't have the biotech that Khanum does, so all the royal buildings are made of stone, which to Din connotes opulence) "kings aren't some divine creatures, they're just humans, and the power structures are really unjust and unfair for people like Malo." The note goes to tendentiously make the point that Did You Know Tyranny Is Bad Mkay, but like...what do you call the Empire? They don't exactly have the right to use force to unilaterally bring Yarrow under their control; are they at fault if they just leave Yarrow alone? IDK. I personally have been in the position of "aw jeez I'm just a miniscule civil servant, what am I supposed to do to fix all the problems of the world," so I could sympathize with Din, but the note felt tacked-on. Overall, though, this is a fun puzzle, and a fast and engrossing read!

(This has nothing to do with the book itself but I loved the cover art on the hardcover edition. Blue flowers, and silver leaves growing out of a hand. Silhouettes of people in the corner--I think Ana in her robes, Din in a conical hat, Malo with her bow, and who's the fourth figure with the spear? Thelenai???)

P. S. The book has a one page "the story so far" at the beginning, so if you want to skip "Tainted Cup" and jump in here, you can do that too!

Bingo: This series is a perfect fit for the Biopunk square. Could also count for A Book In Parts, Published in 2025, LGBTQIA protagonist.

- Of course now I want some kind of Brokeback/On Swift Horses crossover. Maybe like mid-60s, Jack runs into happily partnered Henry and Julius and they listen to his woes and fuck him.

- On related note, sure wish On Swift Horses would get onto streaming! Like for free with subscription, not just VOD like it is now.

- Some highlights from the very serious Oasis discussion forum:
Liam looked especially handsome in the video for 'Don't Go Away'. Elegantly wasted.

Why does it matter [what Noel looks like]? Being pretty is Liam's job.

- The Dead Meat Podcast is covering the entire Saw series, movie by movie. I am so excited. First episode of Hot Saw Summer is here. I have already rewatched Saw II in preparation for the next episode, which comes out tomorrow.

- I am eyeing the Terrible Temperature Troubles flash exchange, although I really shouldn't, because I still need to beat my Hurt/Comfort Ex bus pass into shape, and I have to Summer of Horror treats to work on. Meanwhile I'm also tempted by Battleship, which I said I'd never do again...

Planet Terror (2007). A very silly, pulpy exploitation movie starring a bunch of recognizable people fighting a zombie apocalypse. This is very much the thing that it is. Gross, inappropriate humor, a child shoots himself in the head. Rose McGowan is really hot, but the whole thing is soured by her RL history with Weinstein, who produced. Tarantino cast himself as a would-be rapist in his buddy's film. There's a lot of ehhhhhhh here, is way I'm saying.

I didn't hate watching it, but nor do I need to watch it again.

--

Brokeback Mountain (2005). Two cowboys herd sheep on a mountainside and start a decades-long affair. I got to see this at the theater for the 20-year anniversary, yay. It was pretty good! Heath Ledger was fantastic as Ennis, and the scenery was gorgeous.

That said, I had a lot of quibbles. Truthfully, realistic drama is not my genre even when you make it gay, so feel free to chalk most of my complaints up to that if you want.

That said, there were two key transition points that felt really abrupt and underdeveloped (the first time they have sex, and the reunion after four years apart). I also feel like either Gyllenhaal didn't get enough to work with, or he did not do a great job at working with what he had. It felt like the whole movie Ledger was showing and Gyllenhaal was telling. Ultimately, though, I think my main problem with this movie is I just about never vibe with the "decades of vignettes" drama subgenre. It always feels like the story is spread too thin, and it does here, too.

I do see the criticism about this being too much about tragic gays or whatever. There's no such thing as the universal queer experience, and no one work can capture What It Means To Be Queer, but even so this feels like a particularly narrow and bleak perspective.

Overall probably won't become one of my favorites, but I'm glad I've finally seen it.

Spoilers for everything.  I have over-all been enjoying it still! Learned that it was conceived as a 6 episode show but Apple ordered 10, which definitely explains some things.

Shipping feelings: I have read a lot of good, weird stuff about Gurathin and Murderbot being autistic and strange at each other in various ways involving wirefucking, gunport fingering, and Fucking For Science. As the author of that last one says, "aroace murderbot truthers do not @ me. you know already that god likes you best," I think there's a world where MB can be like "ew put my mouth that I use to talk on a human?" and also be kinky without obliterating the character we get in the books.

Also have read a bunch of good stuff about ART and Murderbot: this amazing one where ART writes Murderbot a sex act code and it's weird and they talk and I just found the vibes and the voices and the way the topic was approached to be perfectly in character.

And this one which fucking REWROTE MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY, half the TL has already rec'd it because I've been screaming about it to anybody who opens a DM with me, the fucking INTIMACY, the tenderness, the most relatable piece of media since the actual books. The voices and interaction are perfect, the feelings are perfect, the nonsexual kink and sensory overload and praise kink ("ART said, Your recent security performance continues to meet expectations. I couldn’t deal with that either,") are perfect, it's all perfect, go read it.

And because I wouldn't be me if I weren't bringing the gross: here's some fic where Iris masturbates with Perihelion's help and it gets its robot rocks off on acoustics. It's the highest quality what if you jerked off with your sibling and your sibling was a giant sentient space ship fic out there, I'm convinced.

Briefly, Venice

For our 25th anniversary, Krissy and I were planning to go to Iceland and spend a week or so there, getting to know the country. Then the pandemic happened and we ended up spending the anniversary at home. Fine, we would just reschedule Iceland for our 30th anniversary. But then I was invited to do a convention in Iceland last year, and we tacked on an extra five days after the convention to do all the things we planned for our 25th anniversary. This left our 30th anniversary suddenly unscheduled.

Fortunately, I had a backup: I had always wanted to visit Venice, not just for Venice itself, but also, goofily, for the fact there is a Church of the Scalzi there, and a Scalzi Bridge, and, heck, why not, even a Scalzi restaurant. Honestly, how could I not go? Krissy indulged me, and on the week of our anniversary, off we went.

We spent a full week in Venice, which appeared to surprise the people there when we mentioned the fact to them. Apparently Venice is usually a couple-days stop at most, tourists grimly marching themselves from the Doge’s palace to the obligatory gondola ride to wherever else they went before they were hustled back onto a bus or cruise ship and sent off to whatever the next destination was. The fact we were in town for a whole week impressed the locals. They seemed to appreciate that we wanted to take in the city at a leisurely pace.

Which is what we did! We did have two days where we had a private guide to give us a walking tour of the city (including stops at the aforementioned Doge’s palace, St. Mark’s basilica and the Scalzi church) and to take us over to Murano to watch glass being blown. And of course we rode in a gondola, because, hey, we were in fact tourists, and not afraid to do touristy things. But most of the days there we woke up late, wandered around the city and maybe took in a museum or church, and then ate at a bunch of restaurants and hung out in a bunch of bars, mostly on the water, and watched the city go by in various boats. Venice, as it turns out, is a lovely city to just be in. Krissy and I mostly did a lot of not much, and it was pretty great.

Mind you, Venice is one of the most overtouristed cities in the world, and as a visitor you can certainly feel that, especially on the weekends, in the space between the Rialto Bridge and the Piazza San Marco. It’s Disneyland-level crowded there. I can’t complain overmuch about that fact without being a full-blown hypocrite, but we did understand that our role in town was to drop a lot of money into the local economy in order to balance out our presence. We were happy to do that, and, you know, to be respectful of the people who were helping to give us a delightful vacation. By and large the Venetians were perfectly nice, did not seem to dislike us merely for being Americans, and in any event we got out of town before Jeff Bezos could show up and make everyone genuinely angry. No one blamed us for Jeff Bezos, either.

One of the things I personally genuinely enjoyed about Venice was just how utterly unlike anywhere in the United States. Yes, I know there are places in the US where they have canals; heck, the Venice in California was once meant to have them all over the place. But it’s not only about the canals. It’s about the fact that no matter what street you’re going down, what bridge you’re crossing or what side canal you’re looking down into, parts of everything you’re looking at have been there longer than the US has been a country, and none of it accommodates anything that the US would require. There are no cars in Venice, no Vespas, not even any bikes. If you’re going anywhere, you’re walking or going by boat. It’s very weird to have no road noise anywhere. You don’t realize how much you get used that noise, even in a rural area like the one I live in, until you go some place without it. I mean, there are boats with engines. The sounds of internal combustion are not entirely gone. But it’s dramatically reduced.

As mentioned, we stayed in Venice for a week, which I think is probably the right amount of time to be in the city. We didn’t see everything it had to offer, but then we weren’t trying to; if and when we go back there will still be new things to explore. But I did get to check off visiting the Scalzi Bridge, Church and restaurant, and the last of these was where Krissy and I had our actual 30th anniversary dinner. It’s was pretty good. I did not get a discount because of my last name. Alas. Here’s picture of the interior of the Church of the Scalzi:

Slightly more ornate than the one in Bradford, Ohio, I admit. But in defense of the one in Ohio, it’s much easier to dust.

Would I recommend Venice to others? Definitely. Spend more than a couple of days. Be respectful. Spend a decent amount of money. Have an Aperol Spritz. If you’re from the US, enjoy the fact there is nothing like it in the American experience. Maybe avoid the Rialto Bridge on the weekend. And there you have it: an excellent Venetian vacation. I hope you’ll enjoy yours as much as we enjoyed ours.

I was trivially able to dig out an example of a documented 5:1 female:male ratio.

Why yes I am rereading The Way Out (previous commentary) for the purposes of making notes on content and structure.
