I'd find staging fixit AUs charming too - in today's context, where it's no problem getting the original texts and staging of same. The problem in GB was that post Restoration, massively rewritten Shakespeare was the only type that got staged at all, until Garrick, and even Garrick did his own rewrites. And that's taking the fixit impulse too far.

(I imagine the reaction for a part of the theatre audience when the original plays got back into fashion was similar to the show people who first were exposed to the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Little Mermaid via Disney as kids get when they read the original as adults....
