As that thing in Fragments still sticks in my throat, I turned to fanfiction new and old. Such as:
Torchwood:
Fragments of Phone Calls is a Jack pov on Tosh's recruitment, based on my favourite theory (as voiced by
londonkds) about the circumstances of said recruitment. Oh yes.
Doctor Who:
Old Soldiers: What the Brigadier (and some other UNIT folk) did during the various invasions in New Who. Lovely Brig portrait, and the last line is just perfect.
Argumentum at Metam: set early in Jo's time with UNIT; an adventure for her and the Doctor when they were still getting used to each other. In addition to being an excellent Jo portrait, it's a genuinenly scary adventure.
***
The friendship between the Doctor and the Brigadier is one of my very favourite things in DW; it's prickly at times, they often disagree, but there is always respect and affection, and the Brigadier is unarguably the human being who knows the Doctor longest and best, through so many of his regenerations. So, two Brig and Doctor tales:
Vestigium Memoria: set after "Spearheads from Space": the Brigadier asks the Doctor what happened to Jamie and Zoe.
Priority: the Brigadier and the Doctor after Liz left, and before Jo arrived. Great banter, weary affection, and a little subtext.
YouTube being ever so useful in this regard, I also offer two clips I found there:
The (Fifth) Doctor encounters a Brigadier suffering from amnesia. With some gentle coaxing the memories come flooding back.
Some inventive guy set the last scene from The Green Death to New Who music. If you've watched The Green Death, you know that the Doctor getting possessive over a blonde Companion and then going all emo when losing her is really nothing new. Here Three is doing the angsting after leaving Jo's engagement party:
Lasty, nothing to do with UNIT personnel, but splendid fun to read: Ecology for Beginners, which is set during the Academy years of the Master, the Doctor and the Rani. (Gen, btw.) So very them...

The Brigadier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigadier_Lethbridge-Stewart)
The Brigadier is THE Übercompanion. He's the only Doctor Who character to appear in 11 different seasons, 9 consecutive seasons, 23 serials, and appear in all 3 decades of the classic series. As the actor is still alive, we're all hoping he'll have at least a cameo appearance on New Who - he worked with all the other Doctors.
A Brigadier vid I linked last week:

There's a depth of wistfulness behind the bluster, and empathy, and anyway, how could I not love someone who comes up with the immortal answer to Gwen's question about "ever eating alien meat?"
