Iron Man (movieverse):
The Medley of Elan Vital: I maintain making Jarvis an A.I. for the film has been one of the most inspired twists on comics canon. This story follows Jarvis' creation and pulls off a credible A.I. point of view through the events of the movie as well, and the characterisations of Tony, Obediah Stane and Pepper are all utterly compelling.
...on a sidenote, I want someone to write an Iron Man/ Sarah Connor Chronicles crossover. It'll probably have to be movieverse, because there is no way you can pull off the SCC future in the comicverse, which is essential for the premise, but it could be amazing.
Six Feet Under:
Half Acre: a great, great vid about what is still one of my favourite shows of all time, Six Feet Under. The way it portrays the Fishers, using Claire's photography as a point of view, all the connections - it's just beautiful.

Date: 2008-12-18 02:45 pm (UTC)Re: Jarvis (and assorted robotic friends) - if they had played Jarvis as a human butler, all the movie-going audience would have cried foul and "lame Batman imitation!". On the other hand, making Jarvis an AI wouldn't have worked with another superhero but Tony Stark, not just because being a genius inventor is part of the character premise but because Tony is both messed up enough and has the right sense of humour to interact with AIs as people (which also allows the film to make a point about the character by showing, not telling). (Not to mention that it makes for some comic relief that doesn't feel forced, always tricky in an action movie.) You can't imagine presenting Bruce Wayne - any version of him - like that, so instead of getting scenes that would look like imitations to the movie going audience not familiar with the comics, they got scenes that served to illustrate a difference. Well done, scriptwriters!

Date: 2008-12-18 03:39 pm (UTC)Yeah. I suspect a big part of the problem is that a lot of film-makers who adapt comics approach it as if they're making A Comic Book Movie, with that whole set of outside preconceptions about what comics are like. (Big bangs! Flashy colours! Spandex! Fight scenes!) Whereas Marvel just assumed they were making a proper movie and actually paid attention to things like characterisation, acting and dialogue.
And, yes, I think I did read that post just after I went to see the movie. Although, much like the movie itself, it means more to me now I've actually read a bunch of the comics.
